Great Charles Bukowski Quote

Start The Greatest Fire Again

In the documentary film “Bukowski: Born into This“, Charles Bukowski utters some hopeful encouraging words.

Shot over seven years by filmmaker John Dullaghan, this intimate portrait of writer Charles Bukowski reveals a tortured man who survived years of abuse to produce some of the most influential prose of his generation. Packed with interviews with friends and colleagues, the film also showcases rare footage culled from every phase of Bukowski’s past.

In one such clip, Bukowski had been working as a postal worker all day and writing every night. He was sending his poems and stories to publishers and none of them gave him any respect — only rejection notices. Bukowski recalls,

“I was laying in bed one night and I thought ‘I’ll just quit — to hell with it.’ And another little voice inside me said ‘Don’t quit — save that tiny little ember of spark.’ And never give them that spark because as long as you have that spark, you can start the greatest fire again.”

C. Bukowski

That was so awesome I had to write it down. It seems like a universal plight, to let life beat you down, to loose hope on your dreams, to put out that inner fire.  Here’s a guy who almost did just that…but he saved the tiny ember of a spark and grew the greatest fire again.
