Rabid Skunk Bites Dog at Dows Lane

The Irvington police and a Greenburgh Animal Control officer were at Dows Lane Elementary School this afternoon because a rabid skunk bit a dog today in the vicinity of the school.
Parents were asked to keep their children off the playground after school today. The animal control officer indicated that the playground next to Oak & Willow Streets would most likely be closed for 10 days. That’s how long it takes a rabid skunk to expire.
Karla Garcia, baby sitter to local children, said she saw the skunk chasing a dog in broad day light. Skunks are nocternal and they usually don’t chase dogs. They don’t have to! But this unusual behavior is typical of rabid animals.
Garcia said the children were yelling “look at the skunk look at the skunk” and they wanted to get closer. The baby sitter wisely helped make sure the children were safe.
Later, two shots were heard and parents have reported that the skunk was killed and taken away.
